Animal ID: 2014-022Dobbyn (male)

Doberman Pinscher    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Dobbyn is a red and tan neutered male, with natural ears and docked tail. His foster has been told by the previous owners he was 3 to 5 years old, but his vet records state his birthday as 2012 and he weighs a very healthy 80 lbs. Dobbyn is up to date on his vaccines, received his Rabies, DHLPP, and Bordetella on 7/18/14. No history known of any heartworm testing and he would be required to be micro-chipped and complete a certificate program for obedience. Dobbyn came to his foster three weeks ago. His owners had placed him in boarding during their vacation, and stated to the staff their intent to re-home him due to aggressive behavior; the ... (Read More)behavior was explained as possessiveness of his toys, blanket, bed and aggression toward new people, those he had not known for the year that they had him. The previous owners and their veterinarian's solution were to place him on Prozac 80mg/day. The only thing that the foster noted when they first met him was that his right eye seemed to be sunken in. Since Dobbyn has been with his foster, they have successfully begun tapering him off of the Prozac. He has been at 60mg/day for 2.5 weeks without issue, with the decrease in medication, his right eye is no longer sunken in, this is believed to have been a side effect of being over medicated. Dobbyn is a lover! He has responded well to both a schedule and routine, and responds as well to affection as he does to food or treats and no food or toy aggression has been seen by his foster. Dobbyn had not been around the foster homes child initially, their 16 year old son was away at camp when he came into the home, when he returned home after Dobbyn had been with his foster for four days, Dobbyn accepted him without any issue. Their son had a friend come to visit and Dobbyn accepted him while outside, but became very territorial and protective immediately when the young man came inside the home, the foster has not had a visitor inside their home without issue, however he is very well mannered while outside. Dobbyn does well with the other dogs in the home (four, and all smaller), but ONLY when leashed and outside. He would do well in a home with no small dogs or cats, although he respects a baby gate that separates him from the two cats in the home. Dobbyn knows bit more than basic commands, sit, lay down, stay, back, and drop, he has also learned 'keep it' when playing tug, telling him to keep it makes him do just that, but he will let go when told to drop it. He rides well in a car, walks well on a leash, is housebroken and crate trained, going into his crate when told 'crate up.' They are not sure if he previously knew all of these commands or if he has learned them since being with his foster. He is a VERY smart boy, but can also show moments of typical Doberman stubbornness. The foster's assessment of this boy is that his previous owners just could NOT have been spending any time with him, constructively or otherwise. Dobbyn attached himself to the wife in the foster home on day one, and has been consistent with his responses to their direction. Dobbyn will need an understanding owner with Doberman experience who will continue his training while providing a loving, safe environment and home.
